Why Fabric Goes Sheer At All
A knit fabric is yarn with holes in it, and stretching it makes the holes bigger. That is the whole mechanism. At rest, the yarns sit close enough together that no light passes. Pull the fabric in two directions at once — which is exactly what a deep squat does across the seat — and the yarns separate. Whether you can see through the result depends on how much yarn there was to begin with and how tightly it was looped.
This is why the failure is so specific to squatting. Standing, the fabric is near its resting state. Bent over a bench, the seat panel is at maximum biaxial stretch. A legging can be perfectly opaque in a mirror and completely sheer in a gym.
Fabric Weight Is The Number Nobody Publishes
The single most predictive spec is fabric weight in GSM (grams per square meter), and almost no consumer listing states it. More grams per square meter means more yarn in the same area, which means less light through the gaps when it stretches. Technical and wholesale listings sometimes give it. Retail listings almost never do.
Since the number is usually missing, you read proxies for it:
- Stated feel. "Buttery," "second-skin," and "weightless" describe lighter knits. "Substantial," "structured," and "compressive" describe heavier ones. Colour is a real variable too, and it is not marketing. Black hides gap-opening better than any other shade. Light greys, pastels, and heathered colourways show it first. The same legging in the same size can pass in black and fail in oatmeal.
Knit Type And Fiber Blend
Two constructions dominate, and they fail differently: flat-knit nylon-elastane and brushed poly-elastane. Nylon-dominant blends tend to hold density better under stretch and resist the thinning that produces sheerness. Polyester blends are cheaper and often lighter, though a heavy polyester knit will outperform a flimsy nylon one — the fiber is a tendency, not a rule. Elastane ratio is the misunderstood one. More elastane does not mean more opaque. Elastane governs recovery and stretch, not coverage. What it does affect is whether the fabric returns to its resting density after you stand up. A blend with too little elastane relative to its stretch demand will bag out and stay slightly open. Seam construction does not affect opacity, but it affects whether opacity matters. A gusseted crotch moves seams away from the highest-stress point and reduces both camel toe and localized stretch. Most quality budget lines now include one.
Fit Is Half The Answer
The most common cause of see-through leggings is not the fabric. It is a size too small. Every knit has an intended extension range. Inside it, the fabric is dense and opaque. Past it, you have pre-stretched the garment before you have even squatted, so the squat starts from an already-open knit.

Buyer photos in reviews are more useful than any claim on the page, because someone has usually posted the exact colourway under real light. A brand's own studio photograph is lit to avoid this question entirely.
Testing The Pair You Own
- Put them on and sit down on a hard chair. Sitting is a milder version of the same stretch.
- Do a full squat in front of a mirror, or have someone photograph the seat panel.
- Do it in daylight, not bathroom light. Overhead artificial light is far more forgiving than a window or a gym's floods.
- Check the seat and the mid-thigh separately. They stretch by different amounts and can fail independently.
If they fail, size up before you write off the brand. If they fail in the correct size, the fabric is genuinely too light for training and it belongs in the lounge-and-errands rotation instead. Neither outcome is a defect, exactly. It is a garment being used outside what its knit was built for.

"Squat-proof" is an unregulated marketing phrase and you should read it as an intention rather than a specification. What actually predicts opacity is fabric weight first, knit density and fiber second, colour third, and correct sizing throughout. A heavier nylon-dominant knit in black, worn in your true size, is about as reliable as this gets without a GSM figure.
And if a listing will not tell you the fiber content at all, that silence is your answer.
