The Three Levels, Plainly
Impact level is a shorthand for how much vertical movement an activity produces, and manufacturers assign it themselves. There is no governing body, no test protocol you can look up, and no requirement that two brands using the same word mean the same thing. Treat it as a starting filter rather than a specification.

The gap between medium and high is where most disappointment lives. A medium-impact bra in a running context is the single most common mismatch, because plenty of them feel supportive standing still in a fitting room. Standing still is not the test.
Compression vs Encapsulation
There are only two ways to restrict movement, and they scale differently: compression presses the chest as one mass, encapsulation supports each breast in its own cup.
- Compression. The classic pullover crop. Simple, cheap, comfortable, no seams or hardware. Works well through roughly an A to C range. Above that, compression alone increasingly means "flattened but still moving," because the force is applied inward rather than upward.
- Encapsulation. Molded or seamed cups that hold each side independently, closer to how a structured everyday bra works. Better shape, better support at larger cup sizes, and the only approach that reliably handles D and above at high impact.

If a listing does not say which mechanism it uses, look at the photograph. Visible cup seams or a molded shape means encapsulation. A flat single-piece front means compression.
The Band Does The Work, Not The Straps
Most of a sports bra's support comes from the underband, which anchors against the ribcage — the straps are a secondary system. This is the most useful thing to know about fit, because it inverts what most people adjust. When a bra feels unsupportive, the instinct is to tighten the straps. Tightening straps transfers load to your shoulders, produces neck and trapezius soreness, and does very little about bounce.
A correct band is firm, level, and horizontal all the way around. Signals it is wrong:
- The band rides up at the back. Too loose. This is the most common fitting error, and it means the anchor has failed.
- Straps dig in and leave marks. The band is not carrying its share.
- You can pull the band far from your ribcage. Too loose, regardless of how the cups feel.
- Breathing is restricted at rest. Too tight. Firm is not the same as constricting.
Wider bands distribute pressure better and are a genuine high-impact feature. A narrow elastic band on something marketed as high impact is a contradiction worth noticing.
Why Size Changes The Answer
A bra's labelled impact rating is usually established at the middle of its size range, and support does not scale linearly outward from there. The same design that genuinely controls movement at a B cup can be inadequate at a DD, because the load has increased substantially while the construction has not.
This is why S/M/L sizing is a limitation rather than a convenience at higher impact. It collapses band size and cup volume into one number, so two people with very different proportions receive the same garment. Band-and-cup sizing (34C, 36DD) exists because those are independent variables. The Practical Rule
Match the level to your hardest activity, not your average one. Buy for the band first: it should be firm and level, and you should be able to loosen the straps without losing support. If you are at a larger cup size and doing high-impact work, prioritize encapsulation and true band-and-cup sizing over anything else, including brand and price.
And treat "high impact" on a listing the way you should treat "squat-proof" on a legging — as a claim about intent, not a measurement.
